Northwood Needs our Help

Share

Dear members,

Nova Scotia is entering a challenging time in our collective fight against COVID-19 and there is urgent need for trained volunteers to work at the region’s largest long-term care facility, Halifax’s Northwood Manor.

The government has asked Unifor, CUPE, NSNU and NSGEU to recruit volunteers who are willing to work at Northwood Manor in the following positions and shifts for the next few weeks:

Days

  • 10 Continuing Care Assistants
  • 4 Registered Nurses/Licensed Practical Nurses

Evenings

  • 20 Continuing Care Assistants
  • 6 Registered Nurses/Licensed Practical Nurses

Nights

  • 10 Continuing Care Assistants
  • 2 Registered Nurses/Licensed Practical Nurses

Six health care unions are working together to secure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocol across the health care sector in a joint campaign at protectnsfrontline.ca, and government has assured unions that appropriate PPE will be provided for workers at Northwood Manor. As always, your safety is our top priority.

We know volunteering will not be possible or desirable for everyone, but we urge you to consider the positive impact you can make for your fellow Unifor members and caregivers at Northwood Manor. They desperately need and will appreciate any extra hands right now.

Please consider this and, if you are interested, make the request through your manager and notify your Local President so the union is informed. Know that you have my respect regardless of your decision.

Thank you to all health care workers today and every day.

In solidarity,
